Tencel is a relatively new product on the market, having been around for fewer than 40 years. It’s made its way into numerous household essentials, becoming a rather popular material, especially in the linens industry. But what is it?
Technically, Tencel is the brand name for lyocell. It is considered a natural product — even though it is man-made — because it’s manufactured from wood pulp cellulose and it’s biodegradable. However, it has a soft feel very similar to that of rayon, and it is considered to be very durable.
While natural fibers tend to be a little more high-maintenance than synthetic (think of how easily cotton can wrinkle), lyocell is actually quite easy to care for. Not only is it usually machine-washable, but it also is wrinkle-resistant. Besides this, it’s breathable and moisture-wicking, which makes it a good fabric for people who have allergies, people with sensitive skin, or people who tend to sleep hot. Plus, its manufacture results in very little waste, so it’s typically considered to be fairly eco-friendly.
US-Mattress carries a number of brands that use Tencel, including DreamFit, Home Source, and Malouf. From mattress and pillow protectors to full sheet sets, you’ll be able to outfit your bed with health-conscious, eco-friendly bedding at an affordable price.
