Pillow Top Vs Euro Top

December 30, 2011

Generally there are 3 different comforts to choose from when it comes to picking a new mattress. Firm, Plush, and Pillow Top. However, over the years, manufacturers have created a sea of different terms for the “Pillow Top” category. Now, there are 2 main types of Pillow Top: Pillow Top, Euro Top, and Box Top. While some retailers will tell you one is better than the other, at the end of the day the differences are largely cosmetic and won’t affect how well your mattress performs.

Let’s start with the term most people are familiar with – Pillow Top. A Pillow Top has an extra layer or two of padding that is stitched approximately 1-2 inches from the outside edge of the mattress. When viewed from the side, the mattress appears to have a pillow on top of the main portion, hence the name pillow top. Pillow tops come in a variety of different comforts ranging from semi firm to extremely soft and are added to help aid in pressure relief.

Pillow Top

The other main option is the Euro Top. A Euro Top is designed to provide all of the same pressure relief benefits of a Pillow Top, but visually looks a lot more like a traditional, non pillow top mattress. This is because a Euro Top is stitched directly to the side of the mattress which gives it a squared off look. Also like pillow tops, euro tops range in comfort from semi firm to extremely soft.

Euro Top

So which one is right for you? The correct answer to that question is both! Because the differences are so small, both choices are great choices assuming you know what comfort level is right for you. I hope this helps answer your question, but if you have any others, please feel free to post them in our comments section and I will be happy to help you in your search for the perfect mattress!

Bedroom Products Made in the USA

December 22, 2011

For many people, purchasing things made in the USA is really important. With concerns for American economic stability, manufacturing processes and the ecological impact of worldwide shipping, it’s a growing issue.

Buying American made products helps improve the entire chain of the United States economy. It starts with the companies providing jobs to local citizens, using American materials and shipping the items to stores based in the US. All of these things come together to improve unemployment rates, lower costs of good and provide income to American companies.

In addition, recent news of questionable chemicals in materials has raised concerns of quality of products. Purchasing products made in the USA insures a certain industry standard that can’t be found in other countries.

But it’s not just a decline in product quality that’s a concern. Shipping containers of heavy wood and metal across oceans, deregulation of environmental policies in other countries and the lack of resource management takes a significant toll on ecology. American citizens purchasing products made in the USA reduces the negative impact on the environment. This is particularly an issue when it comes to large products like bedroom and living room furniture.

Finding products made in the USA can be difficult sometimes. Shopping online where information is clearly displayed can make it a bit easier. Most mattresses are made in the USA. However, it’s harder to find bedroom furniture made in the America because of the wide variety of manufacturer data that companies display. As long as a store is up front with it’s information, shopping for products to support the United States is easier and will help you feel secure in your purchasing decision.

Futons and Daybeds

December 20, 2011

Daybeds and Futons are both great space saving furniture pieces for your home. You can use a daybed or futon for seating during the day. At night, both can be transformed into a comfortable sleeping space. Futons and daybeds are relatively inexpensive and an easy way to increase sleeping space in a guest room, home office, dorm room, or any room of the house for that matter, without sacrificing space.

Futons

Futons

Futons, unlike daybeds, easily fold down to create a flat sleeping surface. More easily put, futons are sofas during the day and beds at night. Futons come in a variety of sizes – Ottoman, Junior Twin, Chair, Full Loveseat, Full Sofa, Queen Sofa, and more. Ottoman and Junior Chair futons are ideal for complimenting a futon loveseat or sofa, but aren’t necessarily suitable for sleeping. Full futon loveseats and futon sofas fold down into a full sized bed, while queen futon sofas fold down into a queen sized bed.

Futons also come in a variety of styles, from sleek and modern to traditional and classic. Many retailers give you the ability to customize your futon by buying it a la carte through first selecting a futon frame, next a futon mattress, and lastly a futon cover. Some retailers also allow you to purchase the futon as a package in a futon and mattress combo. Also, if you ever get tired of your futon mattress or cover design, you can simply update it with a new futon cover.

Convertible sofas should not be confused with futons. While they are similar in function, convertible sofas generally feature a more contemporary design. Futons feature a distinct look, while it is nearly impossible to tell the difference between a convertible sofa and a regular sofa. Like futons, convertible sofas fold down into a flat sleeping space. However, unlike futons, convertible sofas are harder to customize because you can’t interchange covers like you can with futons.

Daybeds

Daybeds

Daybeds, like futons, can be used for sitting during the day and sleeping at night. However, daybeds do not fold down like a futon. Generally, daybeds come in a twin size, but some new styles are available in full too, like some of Lea Kid’s by La-Z-Boy daybeds. As for the daybed mattress, you can use any twin or full size mattress, depending on the size of the daybed. Some daybeds feature a pull out or pop-out trundle. Trundles hide during the day under the daybed only to be revealed at night when you need to double the sleeping space of your daybed. It’s important to know, however, that you can’t use just any mattress on a trundle frame. Instead, look for a mattress with a overall height under 8″.

Like futons, daybeds come in a variety of styles, materials, and finishes. Wood frames, metal frames, upholstered frames, or a combination of those are available in almost every finish imaginable. You’ll easily find a daybed to match your personal style – whether that be fresh and contemporary, shabby chic and cottage, mission, traditional, ornate and old world, and more. Daybeds are also great for use as kid’s beds – especially when bought with a trundle to make sleepovers a snap.

When it comes to accessorizing a daybed, all you need is twin or full bedding, depending on the size of the daybed. The only issue that arises when decorating a daybed is if you desire a bed skirt, you need a special one that features 2 short sides and 1 long side (as opposed to a regular bed skirt that features 2 long sides and 1 short side). Many retailers sell special daybed bedding sets that feature coordinating pieces – usually a comforter, pillow sham(s), decorative pillow(s), and a daybed bed skirt. You also have the option of purchasing a daybed cover. Daybed covers serve the same purpose as daybed bedding while eliminating the need for a bed skirt.

So, if you are looking to add sleeping space without sacrificing space or spending a lot of money, buy a futon or a daybed. Hopefully this article will help you choose what is best for you.

Choosing a Coil System That’s Right for You.

December 15, 2011

For over 100 years mattresses have been using an innerspring or coil to provide support. Many different types of innerspring systems have been developed over the course of the past 100+ years. Which brings us to today’s topic: what are the main types of coil systems and what are the differences? Today there are 4 main coil types: Bonnell, Marshall, Offset, and Continuous.

The Bonnell coil has been used in bedding longer than any other coil. Originally developed for use in buggy seats, this coil can still be found in many low to mid range quality mattresses. These coils are hourglass shaped (think wider at the top and bottom, thinner in the middle) and provide decent support. The problem with Bonnell coils is that while they do provide decent support, they don’t last very long. Your typical Bonnell coil mattress comes with a maximum warranty of only 5 years. If you’re looking for a guest bedroom mattress or plan on replacing your mattress within 5 to 7 years, a Bonnell coil mattress is a good way to save money.

Next up is the Marshall Coil, also known as the individually wrapped or pocketed coil. A Marshal coil mattress contains rows of coils that are usually encased in fabric and then sewn together instead of being linked by steel wire. Marshal coils work independently meaning the coils you put pressure on are the only coils that push back. A Marshal coil is great at reducing the amount of motion that is felt when another person moves. If you’re a light sleeper or sleep with someone who is, a mattress that uses a marshal coil is a great choice. In addition to motion separation, a Marshal coil mattress is designed to provide a very gentle support compared to other “linked” coil systems. The two most popular brands that use a Marshal coil are Simmons Beautyrest and Stearns & Foster.

The third type of coil is the Offset coil. The Offset coil is another hourglass shaped coil, but unlike the Bonnell coil, portions of the top and bottom convolutions are flattened and then linked together by a series of helical wires. Offset coils are designed to conform better than other tied coil systems and provide excellent support as well as long term durability. Offset coils have made a big splash in the mattress industry thanks to the success of Sealy Posturepedic.

Last but not least is the Continuous coil. Continuous coils are very similar to an offset coil except the entire coil system is made from one piece of steel. Like the Offset coil, a Continuous coil system provides great support and long lasting durability (10+ years). The Continuous coil system can be found in the Serta Perfect Sleeper line of mattresses.

So you’re probably wondering, what coil system is the best? Well, it all depends on what you want out of your mattress. If you’re shopping for a mattress that is going to be used part time, or for a short amount of time-think college student- then a mattress that uses a Bonnell coil is going to save you money and get the job done. If you’re a light sleeper or sleep with someone who is, a Marshall coil mattress is the way to go due to it’s superior motion separation. If you’re looking for a solid support and want your mattress to last as long as possible, a mattress that uses an Offset or Continuous coil system is probably the best choice. After you have established what you want from your mattress remember this- whatever coil system you choose, if it’s for you and you want it to last, make sure you remember to choose a mattress that has at least a 10 year NON-PRORATED warranty.

Sleep & Health: How the Two are Entwined

December 13, 2011

Sleep is an important part of living a healthy and productive lifestyle. The amount of sleep one gets, as well as the quality of that sleep, affects appetite and overall weight. Improve your life and shed those unwanted pounds by kicking bad sleeping habits.

Exercise and eating right, while important, are only two of the three ingredients to leading a healthy lifestyle. Sleep, when paired with diet and exercise, is the last and third component of a healthy lifestyle. But why? Ghrelin is the chemical in the brain responsible for stimulating hunger. The less one sleeps, the more this chemical is activated. Sleep deprivation, therefore, leads to hunger and overall weight gain.

Sleep deprived people grab a cup of coffee or reach for a sugar loaded energy drink to fight daytime fatique. While both of these beverages will help one wake up, the refined sugars, empty calories, and excess carbohydrates are known to lead to weight gain. By the time sleep deprived people come home from work, they are too tired to cook a healthy meal or even workout. One then reaches for microwavable foods or snacks that are quick and require little effort. These foods contain even more refined sugars and empty calories. From sunrise to sunset, the entire day is spent eating poorly. This daily cycle will continue during the week as one continues with his or her bad sleeping habits.

How much sleep is enough? The optimal sleep zone is between 7 and 8 hours a night. This zone will help keep the weight off. Get a good night’s sleep by regulating your sleep schedule (go to bed and wake up at the same time everyday), create a relaxing bedtime routine, eat right and exercise regularly, reduce anxiety and stress, and invest in a mattress that provides correct back support and reduces pressure. Ultimately, you will be amazed at the improvements in your life when you receive around 8 hours of sleep each night!

Decorating a Bedroom on a Budget

December 9, 2011

Whether you’ve just moved into a new home or just looking to freshen up your look, decorating a bedroom can be a daunting task. However, it doesn’t have to break the bank. Simply by taking things step by step you can easily save some money and make your bedroom a place of relaxation and style.

The first thing to do is to decide on a color. Sometimes painting is easy and other times it’s not worth the hassle. If you’re going to keep your bedroom walls the same color, try to choose a new and fresh color to bring some new style into the room. If your wall colors are neutral (whites, tans, etc) go with a pop of color to really bring out the new accent pieces.

Don’t be distracted with trying to get new furniture. Keeping what you have will save money. So with the new color(s) you’ve added, try to pick accent pieces that can be a focus of the room. The easiest way to do that is to choose a large piece of wall art or bold fabric for your bedding set. While bedding sets can range in price, something like the Hallmart Felicia Comforter Set contains both the comforter, bed skirt and decorative pillows to give a completely new look to your room with just one purchase.

If you’re looking to keep your current bedding set and want to stay away from wall art, add a splash of color with a rug and new lamp. For a great pop up blue, combine the Momeni Bliss rug with Market Square Deep Blue Table Lamp. The color is calming and the circular style contained in both carry the theme throughout. For a more feminine touch, look this Surya Chic Pink Rug combines well with Market Square Pink Ivy Table Lamp to bring a light pink and white flavor to the room.

However you decide to spruce up your room, think through your colors, style and accent pieces to make a cohesive room without spending a lot of money.

Christmas Gift Ideas

December 6, 2011

This morning I was delightfully surprised to see the trees aglow with bright white snow. I felt like I stepped into a Christmas wonderland! Christmas is coming fast. If you’re like me, Christmas shopping seems to get more difficult every year as I run out of new and creative gift ideas for my friends and family. Here are a few ideas to help you on your Christmas shopping adventures.

Practical is always appreciated, especially in our economy. Over the past few years our economy has plummeted, resulting in a decline in the average American’s disposable income. While fancy and impractical gifts are fun, you can’t go wrong with practical items. Every year I am faced with the question, “What do you want for Christmas?” I reply with the same thing, “Socks, toiletries – Things I need but don’t like buying.” Last year I got a brand new down comforter and was finally able to replace my raggedy (and rather ugly) hand me down comforter. New bedding is nice, but let’s face it – I wasn’t in the position to spend $100 on a new comforter when I already had one that functioned. What’s great too about down and down alternative duvet fills is that they last forever but can easily mimick new interior design trends through the use of duvet covers.

This year I’m hoping to get a new sheet set – particularly one that fits my extra deep mattress. Everyday it’s a struggle to get my fitted sheet to fit over my mattress corners. My fellow employees buzz about the Sealy Bestfit Sheets – and we just introduced a new color, sage, which would look great in my bedroom. Another item that would be nice to have is a mattress pad or mattress protector to help protect my mattress against spills, dirt, and allergens. Even better, a heated mattress pad would help beat the cold this winter.

Like I said though, impratical gifts are fun to pick out and give. Items that are great as gifts include lamps, accent rugs, decorative pillows, clocks, and wall art.

Money is always appreciated as well because it helps people purchase big ticket items that they have been saving up for like mattresses and other furniture items. If you’re like me, however, giving money as a gift takes away the fun of Christmas gift giving. My favorite part of Christmas is giving the perfect gift and seeing my loved one light up with surprise and happiness. I hope you are able to find the perfect gifts for your loved ones this holiday season. And remember, if you don’t like standing in line, you can browse our website from the comfort of your home for any of the above mentioned items. On a budget? We even feature a special section with great gifts under $50.

Happy Holidays

What is Down?

December 1, 2011

What are you doing this winter season to keep warm during those cold, blistery nights? If you haven’t tried down bedding, maybe it’s time…

When it comes to insulating against the cold, down is the best. Down provides thermal insulation with the trapping of air through its many layers. Down can also be packed tightly into small spaces, making it ideal for the use in bedding and outerwear.

But what is down? Down is an adult water bird’s under layer of feathers. Feathers on the outer layer of geese, ducks, and other water birds are 2 dimensional. These feathers protect the bird and aid in flying. Down feathers, however, are 3 dimensional and are grown for warmth and insulation. Because of down’s 3 dimensional characteristic, it is both an insulator and extremely light weight. Down filaments interlock and form a protective layer to keep warm in and cold out. Down traps more air for its weight than any other material.

When shopping for down products, keep in mind that not all down is created equal. The best down feathers come from large, mature water birds (and will also come with a higher price tag). Usually Goose Down is better than Duck Down, but down from an older duck is going to be superior over down from a younger goose. When you’re at the store or shopping online you’re not going to know what bird the down came from. So, the best way to measure the quality of down is through fill power. Fill power is the number of cubic inches displaced by a given ounce of down. The larger the down the higher the warmth to weight ratio, or the higher the fill power, the better the down.

Eider Down has the highest fill power. Eider Down comes from the Eider Duck. Eider Down surpasses all other down because of the feather’s unique ability to cling to itself. This property provides superior insulating power. Eider Ducks are also a protected species. Feathers from Eider Ducks can only be collected by hand from the birds’ nests, so it is guaranteed that Eider Down products are not produced at the expense of the animal.

What about down alternative? Down alternative is the synthetic, man-made version of down. While synthetic down is similar in both loft and insulation, natural down is always going to be warmer and of higher quality. Down provides 3 times as much warmth per ounce than its sister synthetics. Natural down can also last up to 3 times longer than synthetics, if properly cared for. The ability to loft, or fill the space it occupies, is greater in natural down. Synthetics can often mat and lump, leaving cold spots, while down continually re-lofts. Down can also breathe, thus wicking away moisture and perspiration leaving no clamminess like synthetics tend to do.

But what about allergies? You’ve probably heard the myth that people are allergic to down. Allergens do not arise from the feathers themselves, rather result from the dirt, dust, dander, etc. that gets trapped inside the feathers. If properly cared for (washed and cleaned regularly), however, down bedding can actually be hypoallergenic. If you’re seeking a hypoallergenic down product, try Hungarian Goose Down as it is the most hypoallergenic type of down, attracting less allergens than other down types.

Down is truly a unique material, not to mention extremely comfortable! As an informed shopper, you can now make the best decision when buying your next down product. Look for down items that have high fill powers to get the most for your dollar. Eider Duck Down provides more warmth than any other type of down. And if you’re looking for hypoallergenic down, try Hungarian Goose Down, like the Sferra Somna Duvet, Daniadown Norske Duvet, or either of these great hypoallergenic Natural Fill Pillows from Sealy Posturepedic. Or just browse all our down products down products here.

Black Friday

November 24, 2011

Tomorrow, Black Friday, is the biggest shopping day of the year. You’ve probably been slammed with Black Friday ad after Black Friday ad. Before you go out and buy a new mattress this coming holiday, keep a few things in mind.

The average person spends roughly 8 hours a night sleeping. That’s 2,290 hours a year! This fact, along with our physical and psychological need for restful sleep, is why it’s important to buy a mattress that both supports your back and suits your desired comfort level. If Black Friday is day one of your mattress search, we recommend that you do not walk away with a mattress. Instead, do your research. Figure out what comfort level is best for you. Go to your local store and try out a variety of mattress types and brands. Then, use our trademarked Comfort Scale to pinpoint the exact comfort level of your liking.

Also, keep in mind that comfort and the actual support your back receives are different. A soft pillow top mattress can offers the same back support, if not better, than a firm mattress. Ultimately, the quality of support depends on the quality of the innerspring within the mattress. A mattress’s comfort level derives from the type of comfort layers that surround the innerspring. Learn more about comfort vs. support.

Buying a new mattress is not as easy as say, buying new socks. For a successful shopping trip, download our handy Smart Shopping Mattress Guide. This guide provides you with all the information you need to make a smart, informed decision.

This Friday it may be tempting to buy the cheaper “no name” mattress you see on sale…but don’t! Remember, you’ll be spending a third of your next few years on this mattress. If you don’t recognize the name, you can’t know what’s actually in the mattress.

Mattress advice for hip and neck problems

November 22, 2011

From Peggy -

I am having a hard time finding a comfortable mattress. I have back, hip and neck problems (osteo arthritis and degenerative disks) and can’t seem to get comfortable. I have tried a Stearns and Foster Luxury Plus Eurotop – Brandenburg. It was too soft. I felt I my hips sank in too much. Then I tried the Stearns and Foster – Camdenhurst Luxury Plush, thinking it would provide the cushion for my hips but not be too soft. My hips ache on this one. I think it too, is too soft. I think I need something a little firmer but not so firm that I get pressure points. My husband is more flexible than me but doesn’t like it real firm. We currently sleep on a Queen size. On a recent trip we slept in a King Restonic Hotel Comfort Care Bronze Crown and I slept real well every night for a week. At home I toss and turn all night switching positions every hour because of pressure points. Please help me find a mattress that works! Thanks.

Hello Peggy,

I would recommend looking into a Luxury Firm Euro Pillow Top from Stearns & Foster, probably the Princes Street model that uses latex for added durability but still has the individually pocketed coil system for support and conformability. That model has a comfort scale rating of 4.5, so it is a good mix of support and comfort without being too firm or too soft. Other than Stearns & Foster, I would point you towards a Simmons Beautyrest World Class model, something along the lines of the Maplewood Firm Drop Top, comfort scale rating of 5, which uses both Memory Foam and Latex for pressure point relief and durability. Unfortunately, we do not carry Restonic brand mattresses so we don’t have any of the product specifications and we won’t know if or what would be comparable through the manufacturers that we offer. If you have any other questions, please let us know.
