Natural latex is available in two different styles: Talalay and Dunlop. While both styles are natural, the names refer to the type of refinement process that is used to convert the sap of the rubber tree into the comfort material you sleep on at night. Talalay (pronounced tal-la-lay) is the highest quality latex you can find. It’s also the best at reducing pressure, which is why all high quality natural latex mattresses feature Talalay latex near the top of the mattress. Dunlop latex, while still extremely effective at reducing pressure, is commonly used to produce the support cores. This is because the Dunlop process results in a firmer latex than Talalay, making it ideal for back support rather than comfort. The key to finding a quality natural latex mattress is to make sure the mattress has a Dunlop core with at least one layer of Talalay latex near the top. As long as these two criteria are met, you’ll have a great, healthy product that’s built to last.

The other commonly used form of latex in mattresses is synthetic latex. Synthetic latex provides great pressure relief and support, but isn’t the best choice for those looking to purchase a “green” product. However, if this isn’t a concern for you, synthetic latex mattresses will provide you with 20+ years of quality comfort and support just like their natural counterparts.

So which type of latex mattress is best? That depends on your outlook and budget. If you enjoy buying products that are naturally derived and eco-friendly, a natural Talalay or Dunlop latex mattress is an excellent choice. If you’re not worried about the materials, a synthetic latex mattress will provide the same performance and long life at a comparable price. Practical is always appreciated, especially in our economy. Over the past few years our economy has plummeted, resulting in a decline in the average American’s disposable income. While fancy and impractical gifts are fun, you can’t go wrong with practical items. Every year I am faced with the question, “What do you want for Christmas?” I reply with the same thing, “Socks, toiletries – Things I need but don’t like buying.” Last year I got a brand new down comforter and was finally able to replace my raggedy (and rather ugly) hand me down comforter. New bedding is nice, but let’s face it – I wasn’t in the position to spend $100 on a new comforter when I already had one that functioned. What’s great too about down and down alternative duvet fills is that they last forever but can easily mimick new interior design trends through the use of duvet covers.

This year I’m hoping to get a new sheet set – particularly one that fits my extra deep mattress. Everyday it’s a struggle to get my fitted sheet to fit over my mattress corners. My fellow employees buzz about the Sealy Bestfit Sheets – and we just introduced a new color, sage, which would look great in my bedroom. Another item that would be nice to have is a mattress pad or mattress protector to help protect my mattress against spills, dirt, and allergens. Even better, a heated mattress pad would help beat the cold this winter.

Like I said though, impratical gifts are fun to pick out and give. Items that are great as gifts include lamps, accent rugs, decorative pillows, clocks, and wall art.

Money is always appreciated as well because it helps people purchase big ticket items that they have been saving up for like mattresses and other furniture items. The closest model we have to the Simmons Avondale Classic Luxury Firm mattress is the Simmons Beautyrest Classic Indian Cove Plush Pillow Top. The only difference between the two mattress is that the Avondale has latex and the Indian Cove has memory foam.

We found a Simmons Beautyrest Anniversary Plush Pillow Top mattress labeled “Penelope” in the store we found it in, but I don’t know which other model names are comparable to price shop. Could you point me in the right direction?

We carry one Simmons Beautyrest Anniversary model called Chandler. I can not be 100% sure that the Penelope and the Chandler are the same without knowing the foam layers in the surface of the Penelope. I tried researching that name via the internet, and did not find any info about it. If you are able to contact the store you saw this mattress at, and find out if the Penelope has either latex or memory foam or neither? If it has neither, then that would be the same as our Chandler.

Unfortunately we do not sell the Beautyrest Black Collection on our site and I do not have any information as to what is inside the mattress to give you a substitute recommendation. We do sell the Simmons Beautyrest NXG and World Class lines, which have many similarities to the Black Collection.

I purchased a Stearns & Foster Eureka Springs that has memory foam.  it was delivered on Jan. 1st. when it was set up the mattress had a bad odor. I was told that the odor would leave in a couple of days, so I slept on my couch until that Monday.  Now it is Feb. 7th the odor is still in the mattress. I contacted the store and was told they would give a different one that  did not have  memory foam. I paid $1,117.00 for that bed. The manager of store wants to give me a Sealy Cascadia innerspring  mattress. the Stearns & Foster is very comfortable if I can only get rid of the odor. I have a back and hip problem, and Scoliosis. I am confused on what to do. Can you give me some advice.

Your complaint is some what common in the Mattress Industry. Most of the time the smell goes away in a 2 to 4 week period of time, however you need to keep the mattress free of sheets and linens as much as possible, ventilate the room, possibly open a window or use a fan.

My husband and I really liked the Simmons Beautyrest World Class Elderberry Latex Super Pillow Top Plush from Macys. What would be the equivalent of this? Are there any reasons why these mattresses do not have one standard name? It is very confusing. Is there a difference at all?

Is this a good quality bed or would you recommend something else that is similar instead?
