The Westin Heavenly Bed

Introduced in 1999, the Heavenly Bed was produced by Simmons exclusively for Westin Hotels, marketed as a revolutionary hotel sleep experience. In 2005, Westin became the first hotel with a retail presence by making its luxury bed available in stores. For the first time ever, guests were able to bring their hotel bed home with them.

Where Can I Get It?
The Westin Heavenly Bed is currently available at select retailers, as well as directly from Westin. The Westin At Home set includes not only the mattress and box spring, but also a 16-piece set of luxury pillows and fine bedding. Customers also have the option of purchasing only the mattress and box spring.

Last week, as part of a three-part series on sleeping positions, we discussed the pros and cons of sleeping on your stomach. Today, we’ll continue by covering the aspects of a second popular position: sleeping on your side.

 

The Upside of Side Sleeping
Possibly the most common sleeping position, lying on your side as you sleep has plenty of benefits. It takes pressure off of your back, keeps your joints in a neutral position, and can alleviate snoring. Plus, sleeping on your left side can reduce heartburn, making side sleeping a helpful position for those with acid reflux disease. Pregnant women should also consider adopting this position, as it encourages blood flow.

Choose the Right Mattress
While sleeping on your side can be easier on your back, much of the potential benefit depends on your mattress. Lying on your side will follow the natural alignment of your spine as long as your mattress provides the proper support. Do It Right
There are a couple of ways to make side sleeping even more beneficial. By placing a pillow between your knees, you’ll prevent your upper leg from sliding down onto the bed and rotating your lower spine. This slight twist can lead to back and hip pain.

Don’t forget about your neck. Keeping your head elevated is important in ensuring that your neck is aligned properly, but if your pillow is too thick, then it can be just as bad as not having one at all. Sizing Up Your Sleep: Selecting the Right Mattress Size

When it’s time to buy a new mattress, size is one of the most important aspects to consider. The amount of personal space you have while you sleep plays an important role in comfort, so don’t sell yourself short.

The most common mistake made by mattress shoppers is buying too small. If you’re buying for a child, don’t forget to take growing room into account. If you share a bed with someone, consider how much personal sleeping space each of you will need.  Here’s a breakdown of each mattress size to help you figure it out:

Twin – 39″ x 75″ Twin
It doesn’t get any smaller than this unless you’re buying a mattress for a crib. Twin mattresses are a great option for a child’s first mattress, day beds, or guest rooms.

 

 

Twin XL – 39″ x 80″ Twin XL
Many college dorms use twin XL mattresses, which offer a bit more length for an adult. Two twin XLs pushed together are the same size as a king mattress, creating a space-saving option for changing sleep situations.

 

 

Full – 54″ x 75″Full  &  Full XL – 54″ x 80″
Also known as double, full mattresses provide more room for a single person to sleep, but not always enough for two. If you’re going to be sharing the bed with someone else, be aware that two adults in a full mattress each only have 27 inches of personal sleeping space; that’s the same size as a standard crib mattress. A full mattress is also only as long as a twin, which may be too short for taller sleepers. Like the extra long twin size, a full XL mattress is five inches longer than a standard full. This is a great option for those looking for the width of a full mattress with extra length of a twin XL.


Queen – 60″ x 80″Queen
Queen mattresses are a little wider and longer than full-size models, making them a popular choice for couples as well as single sleepers who like a lot of room to stretch out. If you’re concerned about space in your master bedroom, a Queen-size mattress might be perfect for you. You and your sleeping partner can each enjoy 30 inches of personal space in a mattress this size, which is still less than a single adult in a twin-size bed.

 

King – 76″ x 80″King
With almost a foot and a half more width than a queen, a king mattress is the best choice for couples, especially if you prefer more personal space (remember: a king is equal to two twin XL mattresses).

 

 

Cal King  - 72″ x 84 “Cal King
King mattresses are also available in a size called California King, which is 4 inches narrower than a standard king, but adds 4 inches in length, perfect for accommodating taller sleepers or unique sizing situations.

Some beds may require a specially sized mattress. Many antique beds use 3/4 mattresses, while RVs, boats, and semi trucks often include a variety of irregular sizes. Sleeping Positions: Sleeping on Your Stomach

Everyone sleeps differently. While some people prefer to sleep on their backs, others are side or stomach sleepers. However you sleep, it’s important to keep in mind that you spend 6-8 hours in that position each night, which can have a lasting impact on your body. For the first installment in our series on different sleeping positions, we’ll be taking a look at the effects of sleeping on your stomach, and what you can do to improve the quality of your sleep if you’re a stomach sleeper.

Stomach Sleepers Beware
Unfortunately, of the three typical sleeping positions, sleeping on your stomach is the worst for your body and the quality of your sleep. When you lie on your stomach with your head turned to the side, you’re putting a lot of strain on your neck. You wouldn’t want to keep your head turned that far to the side while sitting up awake, and you shouldn’t do it for eight hours every night. Over time, this can lead to chronic stiffness and pain in your neck and back. Lying on your stomach also exerts pressure on the nerves underneath your arms, which can cause a “pins and needles” sensation and interrupt your sleep. Furthermore, the weight of your body compresses your lungs under you, preventing you from drawing in a full breath.

Consider the Alternatives
Lying on your side is an improvement, as it is easier to keep your body and joints in neutral positions. Sleeping on your back is generally considered the best position for sleeping, as it takes the pressure off of your neck and spine, but if you’re a heavy snorer, or if you suffer from sleep apnea, this position can aggravate your symptoms.

Tips for Better Stomach Sleeping
If you’re still ending up on your stomach after trying other positions, it’s important to make sure you’re taking steps to reduce the strain on your body. Because of the strain on your neck, it’s actually best to avoid using a pillow at all. Instead, try elevating one side of your body using a long pillow, or just place pillow under your hips. This will keep your head level with the rest of your body and ease the pressure off of your neck. If you must use a head pillow, a memory foam pillow will be best, and the thinner it is, the better.

The amount of sleep you get each night affects almost every aspect of your life, from how much you eat to how well you can communicate. When you’re not getting enough, your body will tell you: you’re tired, you’re stressed, your ability to focus is diminished, and you’re more likely to make mistakes.

According to The Better Sleep Council, the average adult needs 7-10 hours of sleep every night. People who sleep more – and better – have healthier immune systems, more energy, and a better overall mood. If you’re looking to get better sleep, there are some things you can do other than closing your eyes and crashing at the end of the day.

Where Do You Sleep?
Wherever your bed is, keep that room quiet, comfortable, and calm. You want your body to associate your bedroom with rest and relaxation, so you should reserve it exclusively for sleep. Maintaining a cool temperature also helps promote good rest. Keep out distractions like TVs and computers.

What Are You Doing Before Bed?
Regular exercise is important for both general physical health as well as getting quality sleep, but avoid doing it within two hours of your bed time, as it may be difficult to fall asleep after physical exertion. The same is true for mentally engaging activities, so finish that crossword puzzle a little earlier.

Instead, do something more calming before bed. Try reading a book or listening to soothing music – whatever relaxes you.  Make this your “settling-in” routine to prepare for sleep every night.

Try not to eat at least two hours before you to go to sleep. You shouldn’t go to bed starving, but if you eat a meal just before bedtime, your body will expend energy digesting as you sleep, robbing you of a good night’s rest. Pillow Top Vs Euro Top

Generally there are 3 different comforts to choose from when it comes to picking a new mattress. Firm, Plush, and Pillow Top. However, over the years, manufacturers have created a sea of different terms for the “Pillow Top” category. Now, there are 2 main types of Pillow Top: Pillow Top, Euro Top, and Box Top. While some retailers will tell you one is better than the other, at the end of the day the differences are largely cosmetic and won’t affect how well your mattress performs.

Let’s start with the term most people are familiar with – Pillow Top. A Pillow Top has an extra layer or two of padding that is stitched approximately 1-2 inches from the outside edge of the mattress. When viewed from the side, the mattress appears to have a pillow on top of the main portion, hence the name pillow top. Pillow tops come in a variety of different comforts ranging from semi firm to extremely soft and are added to help aid in pressure relief.

The other main option is the Euro Top. A Euro Top is designed to provide all of the same pressure relief benefits of a Pillow Top, but visually looks a lot more like a traditional, non pillow top mattress. This is because a Euro Top is stitched directly to the side of the mattress which gives it a squared off look. Also like pillow tops, euro tops range in comfort from semi firm to extremely soft.

So which one is right for you? The correct answer to that question is both! Because the differences are so small, both choices are great choices assuming you know what comfort level is right for you. Choosing a Coil System That’s Right for You.

For over 100 years mattresses have been using an innerspring or coil to provide support. Many different types of innerspring systems have been developed over the course of the past 100+ years. Which brings us to today’s topic: what are the main types of coil systems and what are the differences? Today there are 4 main coil types: Bonnell, Marshall, Offset, and Continuous.

The Bonnell coil has been used in bedding longer than any other coil. Originally developed for use in buggy seats, this coil can still be found in many low to mid range quality mattresses. These coils are hourglass shaped (think wider at the top and bottom, thinner in the middle) and provide decent support. The problem with Bonnell coils is that while they do provide decent support, they don’t last very long. Your typical Bonnell coil mattress comes with a maximum warranty of only 5 years. If you’re looking for a guest bedroom mattress or plan on replacing your mattress within 5 to 7 years, a Bonnell coil mattress is a good way to save money.

Next up is the Marshall Coil, also known as the individually wrapped or pocketed coil. A Marshal coil mattress contains rows of coils that are usually encased in fabric and then sewn together instead of being linked by steel wire. Marshal coils work independently meaning the coils you put pressure on are the only coils that push back. A Marshal coil is great at reducing the amount of motion that is felt when another person moves. If you’re a light sleeper or sleep with someone who is, a mattress that uses a marshal coil is a great choice. In addition to motion separation, a Marshal coil mattress is designed to provide a very gentle support compared to other “linked” coil systems. The two most popular brands that use a Marshal coil are Simmons Beautyrest and Stearns & Foster.

The third type of coil is the Offset coil. The Offset coil is another hourglass shaped coil, but unlike the Bonnell coil, portions of the top and bottom convolutions are flattened and then linked together by a series of helical wires. Offset coils are designed to conform better than other tied coil systems and provide excellent support as well as long term durability. Offset coils have made a big splash in the mattress industry thanks to the success of Sealy Posturepedic.

Last but not least is the Continuous coil. Continuous coils are very similar to an offset coil except the entire coil system is made from one piece of steel. Like the Offset coil, a Continuous coil system provides great support and long lasting durability (10+ years). The Continuous coil system can be found in the Serta Perfect Sleeper line of mattresses.

So you’re probably wondering, what coil system is the best? Well, it all depends on what you want out of your mattress. If you’re shopping for a mattress that is going to be used part time, or for a short amount of time-think college student- then a mattress that uses a Bonnell coil is going to save you money and get the job done. If you’re a light sleeper or sleep with someone who is, a Marshall coil mattress is the way to go due to it’s superior motion separation. If you’re looking for a solid support and want your mattress to last as long as possible, a mattress that uses an Offset or Continuous coil system is probably the best choice. After you have established what you want from your mattress remember this- whatever coil system you choose, if it’s for you and you want it to last, make sure you remember to choose a mattress that has at least a 10 year NON-PRORATED warranty.
