What You Eat Before Bed Can Help You Sleep

Sometimes your diet and food choices can affect your sleep. Certain foods and drinks can help you sleep like a baby. Purchasing the perfect mattress from US-Mattress is only part of the battle. If you are not eating properly it can cause you to toss and turn no matter how comfortable your mattress.

Some people believe eating turkey will help you fall asleep fast because of the chemical Tryptophan. When in reality, this is a myth because Tryptophan alone does not make you sleepy. Chicken, fish, milk, and yogurt also have high levels of tryptophan.  So if tryptophan really caused people to sleep, a large portion of Americans would become useless members of society after lunch. In reality, tryptophan has to be combined with a small amount of foods high in carbohydrates to trigger a chemical change and produce serotonin which is the building block of the hormone melatonin. Melatonin is the hormone that aids in a good night’s sleep. Eating some of the following foods around 4 hours of going to bed can help you fall asleep. You have to combine the tryptophan you consumed during the day with some pure carbohydrates to aid in sleep.

  • Milk and a couple cookies
  • Small bowl of cereal
  • Plain bagel and cream cheese
  • Potatoes (mashed or baked)
  • Honey
  • Rice

You have to eat properly to allow your body to produce the right chemicals and hormones to help you fall asleep. So, if you have a new mattress and still have trouble falling asleep fast, take a look at your diet to see if there is room for improving your nightly habits.
