I had a chance to take part in Future Midwest 2010 week here in Metro Detroit. A social media, technology, knowledge and digital conference which included events that occur frequently in our area: local tweetups, Social Media Club Detroit and Tech Cocktail.

Here at US-Mattress.com, we are proud of our roots and proud to be a part of the future of Detroit, Michigan and the Midwest. Many people focus on the bad things that have happened here: the troubles in the auto industry, the layoffs, the massive exodus into the suburbs and now out of the state. They don’t talk about the great things happening. While this conference, other similar events or one person isn’t going to make the difference, working as a whole and exhibiting the passion and innovation that Detroiters have always been known for WILL make a difference, you can count on it.

Passion. I’ve never been in a town that is behind its sports teams as much as here. On game day stadiums are packed; arenas, bars and house parties are full of people watching and cheering on the teams. They’re honking and listening to the games in their cars and it’s not unusual to find the Spirit of Detroit wearing various jerseys. I could on and on. This passion for Detroit and the region was also exhibited over the weekend. Everyone tweeting, commenting, interacting face-to-face, asking questions, showing joy and pride…it was an unbelievable scene of a group of people coming together.

Innovation. It’s in our blood. From soda pop to automobiles, shopping malls to urban freeways and now after a lull the digital Detroit community is thriving. The FutureMidwest Opening Video below that opened the conference, exhibits this passion and innovation that Detroit has always been all about. My favorite part of the video says it all:

We can & We WILL create the culture of innovation that put us on the map 100 years ago.

No matter where you live, this is an unbelievable era we are in. I have no doubt the Midwest will definitely leave a positive mark shaping our future.
