From Debi -
I am concerned about sleeping on my side. The Akerman pillow top we have is to soft and hot, plus the pillow top seems not to spring back and when we get out of the bed there is dents for some time. Being tall and plump does not help I am sure.
Plush is the way to go,now I am not familiar with no springs. At the stores people were saying get ones that are a least 13 gauge wire. Do not want a rock to sleep on, for our hips and and lower back pains.
Let me know what you think about this.
Hi Debi,
If you do choose a mattress that has a coil (spring) system for support, I would agree that it should be at least a 13 gauge wire, or lower ( heavier) for lasting support. Changing to a springless mattress, such as the Sealy Springfree latex gives great support, and pressure relief, for comfortable side sleeping, without being overly soft. If you decide to stay with a traditional mattress, I would recommend getting out of the pillow top and in to a plush top or cushion firm. The issue with the Akerman series is that is has visco memory foam in it, which some people find retains heat. It may be just the pillow top that is warm for you, so I would not write off the Akerman entirely.
The body indentations that you are experiencing are always going to happen with a pillow top mattress, no matter what the manufacture. If you like the feeling of the soft top, my suggestion is to use a firmer mattress and add a latex, (not memory foam, Hot!) topper to it. That way, if it wears out, gets impressions, or your needs changed and you no longer want to use it, you have the option to stop using it, unlike a the pillow top that is attached to the mattress. With that being said, the Sealy Akerman cushion firm may work, or if you want something a little softer than the Akerman Plush. You may find that you do not need any additional padding on the plush. Whenever you change mattresses, it is important to give yourself at least 2 weeks to acclimate to the change, before deciding if it is going to work for you. If you have a chance to try the Sealy solid latex mattress at a local store, I do think that it is the best option for what you are looking for. I have a similar body type to how you described yourself, and that is what my husband and I sleep on, and it is very comfortable.
