Box Spring Performance

August 31, 2009

From Ken -
I’m thinking of purchasing a new mattress…i’m concerned with the new height of many of the euro top mattresses…my wife is very short and my have a difficult time getting on to the bed…..my question is….can I
expect nearly the same performance with the mattress on a hard surface (deck) as with the thinner box spring?..because i would like to lower the bed even lower than the 5″ box spring allows me to do.

Hi Ken,
Yes, you can expect the same comfort and performance should you choose to place your mattress on a solid surface such as a deck.

Sleeping hot

August 29, 2009

From Jennifer -
My husband generates heat, and I’m a hot sleeper. Throw a cat on top, and I’d like them both to sleep somewhere else! What traditional mattress absorbs the least amount of body heat, or at least, doesn’t distribute it to other areas of the bed. I need the mattress most likely to stay cool throughout the night.

Hi Jennifer,
The foam you would probably want to avoid the most is called Visco Memory Foam. It is a heat activated foam. It absorbs your body heat and holds it in order to form a contouring mold to your body.

You may also want to look at models that put silk/wool in the surface which is excellent at regulating temperature.

The most popular mattress for dorm rooms that we sell is the Sealy Vast Sky Plush mattress set. Or, if you just need the mattress, you can buy the Sealy Vast Sky Mattress only which is great for platform or bunk beds.

Made in the USA Firm Mattress Recommendation

August 26, 2009

From Scott -
My wife and I have been using a latex mattress over a wood slate European system for about 7 years. The slates have adjustments for tension. We have liked this bed but my wife has developed recently back problems
which seem to be less when she sleeps on a more traditional “firm” mattress. She noted this when she stayed in hotels on a cross country car trip.

We have a California King sized bed. We plan to use the slats to support the new mattress without a box spring. I have a few questions:

Do you have any recommendations for a high quality mattress that is firm. I would guess that it should be something like what average hotels would order for their typical bedding in terms of the degree of firmness. Price is not a significant issue if the money spent is for real benefit.

Where are Stearns and Foster mattresses made? Are the materials that go into them from this country? Are the mattresses reversible?

Hi Scott,
All of our mattress brands, Stearns & Foster, Sealy, Simmons, Serta and Spring Air, are manufactured here in the US. As far as a good mattress for your wife’s needs and her back issues, you are on the right track going for a firm, or a luxury firm model rather than a plush or a pillow top.

On our website we have a comfort scale, 1 being the firmest and 10 being the softest, so I would suggest staying in the 3-5 range in order to have some comfort but still a firm support system. One Stearns & Foster mattress that has a 3.5 comfort rating is the Robson Street Luxury Firm in their 2009 Core Collection.

Another good option is the top of the line Sealy and that would be in their Signature Collection. That mattress is called the Shadow Dream Luxury Firm and is a 4 on the comfort scale.
